What Are Industrial Louvers? A Complete Buyer's Guide
Industrial louvers are framed panels of angled metal blades fixed into a building's wall openings. They let fresh air flow in while keeping out rain, birds, sunlight and debris. In factories, warehouses and PEB sheds, they are the intake half of a ventilation system: hot air leaves through the roof, and louvers let cooler outside air replace it at a lower level.
If your shed feels stuffy even with roof ventilators running, missing or undersized louvers are often the reason. Exhaust can only work as well as the fresh air that comes in to replace it.
How industrial louvers work
Each blade is set at an angle and overlaps the one below it. Air passes through the gaps, but rain hitting the blade face runs down and out through a drainage section at the bottom of the frame. The blade depth (how far it projects) and pitch (the spacing between blades) decide how much air passes and how well rain is kept out.
In a natural ventilation design, louvers on the side walls work together with a ridge ventilator on the roof. Warm air rises and escapes at the ridge. That creates lower pressure inside, which pulls fresh air in through the wall louvers. This stack effect runs continuously, with no power, motors or noise.

Types of industrial louvers
Industrial louvers are grouped by blade shape, orientation and job.
- Z-type weather louvers: The most common industrial louver. The Z-shaped blade sheds rain and suits side-wall air intake on sheds and warehouses.
- Round-edge louvers: Blades with a rounded nose reduce turbulence and wind noise and resist denting. Geometric Steels' Z203 round-edge louver has an 80 mm profile depth and 140 mm pitch, available in lengths up to 12 m, which means fewer joints on long walls.
- Fine-pitch architectural louvers: Shallow, closely spaced blades used to screen AC units, shafts and façade openings while still ventilating.
- Vertical blade louvers: Vertical aluminium blades used as a modern façade feature on elevations.
- Sand trap louvers: Blades arranged face-to-face (C-type profiles) that make dusty air change direction, dropping sand and heavy dust before it reaches fans, filters or HVAC equipment. Essential for cement plants, mines, desert sites and dusty industrial zones.
- Gravity / backdraft louvers: Blades that open under exhaust pressure and close when the fan stops, used on exhaust fan openings.
Materials: which one fits your site?
Material choice matters more than blade shape for service life.
Material | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Colour-coated Galvalume (PPGL) | Standard industrial sheds, warehouses | Economical; matches colour-coated roof and wall sheeting |
GI, powder coated | Heavy-duty industrial and infrastructure | Thicker gauge with a protective powder coat |
Aluminium, powder coated | Coastal, chemical, fertiliser and food plants; premium façades | Does not red-rust; lighter weight |
Stainless steel | Highly corrosive or hygienic areas | Highest cost |
For aluminium louvers, check that fasteners are stainless steel. Mixing ordinary steel screws with aluminium blades causes galvanic corrosion at the fixing points.
Where industrial louvers are used
- Side walls of PEB factories, warehouses and logistics parks
- Foundries, forging units and heat-treatment shops, where heat build-up is severe
- Cement, steel and power plants with dusty air (sand trap louvers)
- Generator rooms, compressor rooms and electrical substations
- Metro stations, tunnels and infrastructure ventilation shafts
- AC plant screens and building façades
Benefits of industrial louvers
- Better air change: Fresh make-up air lets roof exhaust work properly, lowering indoor heat and humidity.
- Zero running cost: Fixed louvers have no motors and need no electricity.
- Weather protection: Angled blades and drainage sections keep rain out of the building.
- Security and bird protection: Blades plus a bird mesh stop birds and debris without blocking airflow.
- Natural light control: Blades cut direct glare while keeping openings bright.
- Finished look: Colour-matched louvers give a clean elevation instead of open gaps or site-made grills.
How to choose the right industrial louver
Before asking for a quotation, have answers to these questions:
- What is the louver for? Air intake, exhaust, screening or dust control.
- What is the opening size? Width and height of each opening, and how many.
- How exposed is the site? Heavy rain, coastal air, chemicals or dust change the material and blade choice.
- What does the roof exhaust look like? Louver area should be planned together with ridge vents or turbo ventilators.
- Do you need bird mesh or a filter frame? Specify it upfront so it is built into the frame.
- What finish and colour? Match your wall cladding or façade RAL shade.
Factory-made vs site-fabricated louvers
Many projects still use louvers bent from flat sheet on site. These often have uneven blade angles, no proper drainage and raw cut edges that rust early. Factory roll-formed louvers have a uniform pitch and angle, built-in drainage, a matched frame and the right fasteners. They arrive assembled to your sizes, so installation is faster and the result lasts longer.
Industrial louvers from Geometric Steels
Geometric Steels is an ISO 9001:2015 and CE certified manufacturer based in Kurkumbh MIDC, Pune, with 20+ years in industrial roofing and ventilation. Our louver range covers colour-coated Galvalume Z louvers, Z203 round-edge louvers, GI powder-coated louvers with SS 316 fasteners and aluminium bird mesh, aluminium louvers in horizontal and vertical blade designs, and sand trap louvers for dusty sites. Every louver is made to your opening size and supplied ready to install.
Because we also manufacture Airflow ridge vents, we can plan your wall intake and roof exhaust as one system rather than two separate purchases.
FAQs
1. What is the price of industrial louvers per sq ft in India? Price depends on material, thickness, blade type, finish and quantity. Colour-coated Galvalume louvers are the most economical; powder-coated aluminium and sand trap louvers cost more. Share your opening sizes and site conditions for an exact per sq ft quotation.
2. Who is the best industrial louvers manufacturer in Pune / Maharashtra? Look for a manufacturer that roll-forms blades in its own factory, supplies louvers assembled to your sizes, and can design them along with roof ventilation. Geometric Steels manufactures industrial louvers at Kurkumbh MIDC, Pune, and supplies across India.
3. Which louver is best for an industrial shed? For most sheds and warehouses, Z-type colour-coated Galvalume louvers on the side walls are the standard choice. For coastal or chemical sites, choose powder-coated aluminium. For dusty sites, use sand trap louvers.
4. Aluminium or GI louvers: which should I buy? Aluminium does not red-rust and is lighter, so it suits coastal, chemical and food plants. Powder-coated GI is stronger per rupee and suits standard heavy-duty industrial use. Always use stainless steel fasteners with aluminium louvers.
5. Can you make louvers in custom sizes? Yes. Industrial louvers are made to your opening width and height. Round-edge Z203 louvers are available in lengths up to 12 m, which reduces joints on long walls.
6. Do industrial louvers stop rain from entering? Weather louvers are designed to shed rain through angled blades and a bottom drainage section. Rain resistance depends on blade depth, pitch and wind exposure, so specify heavy-rain conditions when ordering.
7. Are louvers needed if I already have turbo ventilators or ridge vents? Yes. Roof ventilators remove hot air, but they need fresh make-up air coming in at a lower level. Without wall louvers, exhaust performance drops. Plan both together.
